The
head
of Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church is Jesus Christ.
The manner in which we operate should reflect his values
and his priorities. His life and teaching as revealed through
Scripture and by the Holy Spirit provide the vision for
Cornerstone.
Our
Congregation as our church body participates
in the selection of church leaders through prayerful involvement
at various levels. Our church body, to seek God's
will and identify fit candidates for the office of Elder
or Deacon, annually forms a Nominating Committee.
The Congregation then has the opportunity to affirm those
candidates for office recommended by the Nominating Congregation.
Elders
are members of the body who provide general care and oversight
oversight for the people of Cornerstone. Our Board
of Elders continually evaluates the teaching ministry of
the church and review major ministry decisions and initiatives.
Through diligent prayer, study, and discussion, our
Elders seek God's direction for Cornerstone's ministry.
Our Elders exercise shepherding care of the church and ensure
that Cornerstone remains on track with teachings of the
Bible. Ultimate decision-making authority rests with
our Elders, as prescribed by the New Testament of the Bible.
Deacons
are members of the body who oversee Cornerstone's benevolence,
finances and facilities. Guided by Cornerstone's vision
and mission for ministry, our Board of Deacons develops
and oversees a financial plan to accomplish eternal goals
with the resources of God's people. Our Deacons pray
and exercise sound management practice to ensure good stewardship
of Cornerstone's finances and facilities. Our Deacons
take the lead in our ministry of mercy to people within
Cornerstone and those in need throughout the community.
Staff
directs the day-to-day affairs of the ministries of the
church. The Senior Pastor directs the staff as a whole.
The staff's main job is to build and coordinate teams of
volunteers so that ministry can happen. The Senior Pastor's
main function is to give leadership to the staff and church.
He is responsible to set the strategies and ministry priorities
for the entire staff to use in building their teams. Together
the staff works to mobilize the people of Cornerstone into
productive service through spiritual gifts, life passions,
and ministry styles.
The
way that these three teams work together is important to
the operation of our ministry. The staff, under the leadership
of the Senior Pastor, directs the ministries of the church;
these ministries are supported by the planning and allocation
of resources from the deacons; all of the activities of
the church, including staff and deacons, are carried out
under the care of the elder board and in keeping with the
mission for ministry that they have determined. All of this
is done under full submission to the Lord Jesus Christ and
the teachings he has given for the healthy operation of
the local church.
The
key to the success of leadership in the church is the
humility with which leaders in any position conduct their
lives. Leaders at any level must use their position as a
platform for service, not as a place of power. The New Testament
gives clear instruction as to the characteristics of leadership
in the kingdom of God. Jesus modeled it best when he wrapped
a towel around his waist, knelt down, and washed the feet
of his disciples after a long walk on a dusty road. (John
13:1-17) His act of humility is a pattern for all believers,
including all leaders, to follow as we put ourselves to
the work of the kingdom. From that premise, we can respect
and follow those whom God has placed in positions of leadership
in the church, maintaining the unity and purpose of our
community.
